1. Capital’s Osborn Breaks NCAA All-Time Points Record

Capital senior midfielder Grace Osborn set the NCAA all-divisions record for career points after a 13-point day in the Comets’ 21-5 victory against Berry. She now has 403 goals and 113 assists for 516 points.
Here is a story from last May on Osborn from Colin McCarthy at USA Lacrosse Magazine.
“Capital head coach Stacey Florence wasn’t sure if she could even get Osborn to commit to the Comets when she first became familiar with the shifty middie her freshman year of high school. Even then, Florence could tell Osborn was a highly skilled scorer, and landing her would be difficult for a program as new and as small as Capital.
“Oh my God, she’s going to go D-I,” Florence remembers thinking.
Ultimately, though, Osborn preferred to stay closer to home. Her high school coach’s daughter was a former Pickerington-to-Capital product, and that familiarity helped open the door for Florence.”
» Field Awareness. “She makes scoring look effortless on the field, but it’s the hard offseason work that keeps Osborn growing and increasing her production each season. Wall ball is part of her daily routine. Four years of cross country and a love for running helps keep her in games as long as possible, staying on the field for nearly the full 60 minutes. Earlier this season, Osborn played in all 66 minutes of Capital’s overtime win over Hope, playing both sides of the ball and taking draw controls. “She’ll run them until they can’t do it anymore,” Florence said.”
» The Key Stat. “Osborn doesn’t know her exact numbers, or where they stand among the Division III record book. But Florence knows. Her sports information director knows. Her teammates do, too. And they’re all loving every second of the ride they’re on together.”
» Worth Noting. “They love it, they support her 100 percent. She’s putting our school and our program on the map,” Florence said. “It’s unreal what she’s doing for our program and our university, and we encourage her and help her.

2. Bronx Lacrosse Serves as a Community Lifeline

Muhammed Krubally
by Paul Ohanian, USA Lacrosse
“Growing up in the Bronx, the harsh realities of Muhammed Krubally’s environment included violence, gangs, and crime. The opportunities and temptations to go down the wrong path were easy and plentiful. But for a chance encounter with former Tufts University player Dan Leventhal when Krubally was 11 years old, he may have been victim to those realities.
“It was during recess when I was in the sixth grade and Dan was playing Wall Ball,” Krubally recounts. “Dan saw in me what others overlooked – my potential as a student and an athlete.”
Krubally’s connection to lacrosse was born that day on the playground. Now 18 and college bound, he is grateful for the alternatives that Bronx Lacrosse founder Leventhal offered.”
» Field Awareness. “More than just introducing lacrosse to youth, since 2016 Bronx Lacrosse has been committed to providing the same type of life opportunities that Krubally experienced through the help of Leventhal’s non-profit organization. Today, Bronx Lacrosse serves about 300 middle and high school students through a year-round academic & sports-based development program. With partnerships to four middle schools and two high schools, the mission is to improve educational opportunities and life outcomes for underserved students. Demographically, 63% of the participants are of Hispanic/Latino heritage, with another 34% identifying as Black.”
» Why It Matters. “Bronx Lacrosse students have a 100% graduation rate from high school, and a 95% average school attendance rate. Due to its rigorous tutoring program, 61% of Bronx Lacrosse students pass the Algebra Regents exam – an essential milestone for graduation in New York – a rate that’s 23% higher than other students in Bronx District 9.”
» Reality Check. “Despite the success, there are obstacles. Basketball, baseball, soccer and football are still the top draws in the Bronx. Attracting students to lacrosse and having the resources to support their involvement is a constant challenge. “Having enough quality equipment is an ongoing issue,” Nick Leffler said. “Even something like getting new cleats can be a struggle. We play year-round, and kids just wear through them.”
» Of Note. “Bronx Lacrosse is a lifeline in our community,” said Krubally, headed to Skidmore College as a member of the lacrosse team. “They have created a family of like-minded people that strive to achieve goals, both on and off the field. The doors that lacrosse has opened for me have forever changed my life, and I’m forever grateful.”
OPINION
3. Going With the Flo?

by Caleb Otte, Chapman Panther
“Division III athletics are not immune to the streaming age.
This past summer, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) entered into a five-year contract with FloSports to be the digital platform for all of their sporting events. While each college still handles the individual broadcasts, you have to be subscribed to FloSports to watch them live.
(The) Chapman Sports Broadcast Network (CSBN) got its start a decade ago. Initially a small group on campus, the club has provided an increasingly professional-level backdrop to Chapman sports. With the help of the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, the production is on par with world renowned outlets.”
» Field Awareness. “According to their president, Ben Sherman, CSBN has peaked at over 2,000 views for live streams on their YouTube channel. Their highest so far with FloSports has only reached 500, with most broadcasts sitting around the 200 or 300 count. What’s most telling is the success of the lacrosse games. Chapman’s men’s lacrosse team isn’t affiliated with the SCIAC or NCAA. FloSports isn’t part of the equation. Sherman told The Panther that 1,300 people were watching the first game of the season — more than double CSBN’s best numbers when put behind a paywall.”
» The Challenge. ““The graphics and the quality of the broadcast are so much better,” said Sammy Fahn of Cal Lutheran. Fahn talked about how Cal Lutheran can show more angles of their games and it creates a better viewing experience for families of their athletes. Both Sherman and Fahn pointed out that the paywall is a deterrent for families. Even though the broadcasts are high-level, what does it matter if you can’t watch your kid play?
» The Point. “There is a balance that the SCIAC is continuing to try and maintain: reaching new fans and valuing the true supporters of the conference. FloSports isn’t going anywhere. That’s been made clear. They have work to do to make the deal a success.”
