Middlebury scored twice in the final 15 seconds to stun #7 Wesleyan, 10-9, on Saturday in Vermont.
The Cardinals’ Ben Burns broke an 8-all tie with 1:24 remaining with his fourth goal of the game to seemingly put the visitors in the drivers’ seat. The Panthers’ Russell Thorndike converted a pass from Cooper DeMallie in the top right corner of the net with 17 seconds remaining to knot the score at 9.
Wesleyan won the ensuing faceoff, but turned the ball over near midfield, setting the stage for Billy Curtis who put a bouncer past Cardinal GK Conor Selfridge for the game-winner with :02 showing on the clock.
Middlebury outshot Wesleyan, 33-30, and improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC. Wesleyan fell to 5-2 and 3-1 in conference play.
