TOP STORY
1. NCAA President Charlie Baker on Sports Betting: "The Phone Changed Everything"

“In just a few short years, sports betting has gone from an occasional Vegas detour to a constant presence in American life. A tap away on your phone. A fixture in every commercial break. A storyline woven into every game.
As betting has surged, so have the ripple effects: social media abuse, integrity concerns, pressure on athletes, and an entirely new culture forming around wins, losses, and prop bets. College sports sits at the center of that storm. So I spoke with NCAA President Charlie Baker (no relation) about what he's seeing, what worries him and what comes next.”
» Driving The News. “According to a recent NCAA study, 36% of Division I men's basketball athletes reported experiencing social media abuse related to sports betting within the last year, while 29% reported having interacted with a student on campus who had placed a bet on their team.”
» What They’re Saying. “So there's just so many things about the technology that I think we can't underestimate in the growth and the interest and the access that people have to this stuff. The phone changed everything. People just weren't thinking at that point [in 2018] about how fast this whole thing was going to end up in the palm of your hand.” - Baker
» The Final Word. “It just says . And solving it at the federal level is going to be really challenging because it's still new and not fully formed. So, I mean, you're basically talking about no rules, no oversight, no nothing. And that just feels catastrophic to me. Not just for us, but for everybody.”

3. Performance Technology Guidance Approved by CSMAS

“The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports approved guidance on the responsible use of performance technologies during a virtual meeting earlier this week.
Performance technologies are devices that enable users to collect and record biometric and/or performance data. Devices may be directly attached to individual athletes or their athletic equipment, or they may indirectly monitor athletic performance (e.g., cameras, sensors, surveys, software, mobile apps).
The consensus process resulted in the creation of foundational statements (the most important takeaways), recommendation statements (general considerations) and strategy statements (for implementation).”
» Prevention and Harm Reduction. “The committee also reviewed a charter to create a Prevention and Harm Reduction Advisory Group, which it will charge with making recommendations to update the NCAA Substance Misuse Prevention Tool Kit and generating guidance on other health promotion topics (e.g., sports betting, hazing). The newly commissioned advisory group will begin its work in spring 2026.”
4. Previous Conference Champions
Part 2 in our series looking back at the history of NCAA Division III lacrosse. Today, we begin with men’s conference champions for five current conferences and one no longer in business.

5. Lightning Round
» Merger. “Willamette University and Pacific University are looking to merge after their leaders signed a letter of intent to negotiate a definitive agreement, the Oregon institutions announced Thursday.”
