1. Northland College Announces Closure

by Josh Moody, Inside Higher Ed

“Northland College in Wisconsin will close at the end of the 2024–25 academic year amid insurmountable financial challenges and declining enrollment, officials announced Wednesday.

The closure comes after a year on the ropes for Northland.

“Despite the collaborative efforts of the entire Northland family, we no longer have the resources needed to navigate the economic and demographic storms endangering small, liberal arts institutions today,” Ted Bristol, chair of the Northland College Board of Trustees, said in a statement announcing the closure decision. “With declining enrollment and soaring costs, it takes more to operate the College than we raise in tuition. Even after enacting aggressive measures to cut costs and raise revenues, Northland College has no sustainable path forward.”

» What They’re Saying. ““The formal announcement of Northland College closing as an institution comes with great sadness,” said Corey Borchardt, UMAC Commissioner. “Northland has been a valuable member of the UMAC for nearly three decades and the conference extends great empathy to the institutional senior leadership team, athletics department administrative team, members of the coaching staff, and student-athletes. As a conference, we will continue to support Northland student-athletes and athletics staff members through this challenging time.”

» What’s Next. The Northland men’s lacrosse season will continue with the Jacks scheduled to play their opener on March 5 against Clarke. Remaining conference members are engaging in contingency plans for 2025-26 and will begin the process of developing updated future schedules as well as addressing other conference operational impacts.

Percent of CFO job listings that mention AI, according to software company Datarails’ analysis of 1k job descriptions.

That’s up from the 8% of CFO job postings that included AI just one year ago in January 2024.

If you're hoping that’s just an anomaly, nah, not so much. Demand for AI also extends outside of the C-suite: Mentions of AI appeared in 35% of all financial analyst listings, more than double the 14% in 2024.
