TOP STORY
1. Pace of Play, Rules, Safety Among Key Tenets of IWLCA White Paper Project

“The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) released a White Paper produced by CarrSports Consulting, LLC., on Wednesday, wrapping up a year-long project aimed at developing a comprehensive plan to unify and grow women’s lacrosse.
“It’s a pivotal moment for our game,” IWLCA executive director Liz Robertshaw said Wednesday morning. “We can’t sit by and watch. This [White Paper] really does show us the need for bold, immediate action.”
Extensive research, interviews with 57 women’s lacrosse stakeholders totaling over 100 hours of listening sessions and a survey featuring input from 1,065 stakeholders aided CarrSports put forth its comprehensive review of the sport’s landscape.”
» What’s Inside. “In the 35-page White Paper, CarrSports presented five strategic priorities, anchored by three core guiding tenets of growing the game, promoting the sport and prioritizing safe play - (1) Establish a unified vision and brand; (2) Simplify rules and game administration; (3) Attract and retain exemplary game officials; (4) Enhance the championship experience, and; (5) Expand and maximize media exposure.”
» Driving The News. “Robertshaw explained that the White Paper was not just a suggestion or idea. She views the report as a roadmap built on data and research. It was an opportunity for the IWLCA to invest in itself with the goal of elevating the sport and adapting to the new NCAA atmosphere brought forth by the recent House Settlement.”
» The Final Goal. “Ultimately, the findings of the White Paper lead to education for those who make decisions. That, Robertshaw said, will help “enlighten” people in leadership positions. “There’s openness where there’s education.”
2. Rejoice! No More Bench Limits in DIII Tournament Games

“One of the issues that’s plagued coaches for more than a decade has been addressed, as the NCAA ruled to get rid of bench limits for the DIII tournament.
It was a point of contention every year during Men’s Lacrosse Committee and Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association meetings. During the NCAA Tournament, only 50 people were allowed to be on the bench — including non-player personnel — meaning a chunk of a team had to watch their teammates from the stands.”
» Field Awareness. “The bench can now include all student-athletes in uniform that are on your posted active roster,” the IMLCA wrote to DIII coaches this week. The NCAA DIII Championships Committee affirmed the recommendation of the lacrosse committee that was put forth this summer in the annual meetings.”
» Why It Matters. “These student-athletes are a part of the team all season, but when they make the NCAA championship selected student-athletes are regulated to sit in the stands away from their teammates. This is a situation where no coach, administrator or athlete looks forward to either. For those teams that make it to the NCAA championship tournament, it immediately turns into one of the lowest moments of the year for the coaching staff, administrators and of course the selected student athletes and parents. They should all be celebrating and preparing for their next opponent, when the focus then turns to ‘how am I going to tell these kids they are sitting in the stands?”

3. USA Lacrosse Announces Partnership with Scoops Lacrosse to Spur Early Participation

“USA Lacrosse is teaming up with Scoops Lacrosse to spark a love for the game among its youngest players. Through a new partnership, kids aged 3-7 can dive into Scoops’ fun, high-energy programs designed to make every scoop, pass, and goal an unforgettable first step into the sport.
Founded by former college lacrosse player Matt Belson, Scoops Lacrosse brings high-energy activities that leaves kids smiling and feeling good about themselves. It’s a recipe to fuel the growth of lacrosse, falling directly in line with the USA Lacrosse mission.”
» Quotable. “This partnership redefines how a national governing body can grow its sport,” said Will Blake, Vice President, Commercial, USA Lacrosse. “By franchising our introductory programming with Scoops, we’re not just putting our logo on a curriculum—we’re investing in a scalable, age‑appropriate platform that introduces lacrosse to children as young as three and keeps them engaged for life.”
» What They’re Saying. “At Scoops, everything we do is about growing the game and spreading the love of lacrosse,” said Belson, aka Coach Bels, founder and Chief Scoops Officer of Scoops Lacrosse. “This partnership lets us reach more families and fire up the next generation of lacrosse rock stars. We’re all about helping kids build confidence, make connections, and have a blast every time they hit the field. That’s what growing the game the right way looks like.”
» The Bottom Line. “USA Lacrosse, and its Elevate28 partners, have a publicly stated goal of aiming to double participation in the sport nationally by 2030. There are currently more children under the age of 10 playing the sport than ever before. This multi-year agreement provides another powerful pathway to welcome new players who will grow with the game through USA Lacrosse community and club programs.”
4. Presidents Council Exempts DIII From Newly Adopted Women’s Lax Rule
The Division III Presidents Council held its quarterly meeting on October 28. The council reviewed and supported a request from five Division III conferences to exempt Division III from a newly adopted playing rule in women’s lacrosse that requires officials to wear headsets beginning with the 2027 season.
The council noted the potential long-term impact on officials within the sport, the precedent this may establish for other sports, the benefit for allowing flexibility for officials in regions where headset use is common, while providing additional time for others to acquire the necessary equipment. The council’s action renders the new playing rule as permissive rather than mandatory.”
5. Lightning Round
» Awards. “Beginning this academic year, the NCAA's Elite 90 award will be renamed the Elite Scholar-Athlete award. The honor, which recognizes student-athletes and their exceptional achievements in athletics and academics, is given to the individual with the highest cumulative GPA at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.”
» Gifts. “Hampden-Sydney College has received a gift of over $50 million - the largest single donation in the institution’s 250-year history - to establish a full-tuition, merit-based scholarship program. The investment, from alumnus Rob Citrone and his wife, Cindy, will establish the Citrone Scholars Program, which will provide qualifying prospective students with four-year scholarships to the all-men’s liberal arts college in Virginia.”
» Recognition. “The Roanoke Men’s Lacrosse Locker Room is now officially named after Coach Bill Pilat #37, thanks to the immense generosity of alumni, parents, and friends, as $200,000 was donated to celebrate and preserve his lasting legacy.”
